Nutrition claims: Reading between the lines

We often see claims such as “trans fat free” and “reduced calorie” on the front of food packages highlighting the nutritional characteristics of a product. They are a quick and easy way to obtain information about a food, but these statements do not tell any catchy story. For example, a food free of trans fats can still be high in calories. Also be sure to read the Nutrition Facts panel to determine what a claim is really to say. In addition, the word “light” on a food label can mean different things. This claim is used to describe a food as “reduced fat” and “reduced calorie” but not always. Sometimes the word “light”, describes the taste, color or texture of food. Manufacturers should describe what is “light” on food. Manufacturers can use a nutrition claim if their product meets certain criteria. Here are some other definitions for applications that may be helpful: “Low” is always associated with a very small amount. “Low fat” means the food contains no more than 3g (grams) of fat in the amount of food specified in the Nutrition Facts. “Reduced calorie” means the food contains at least 25% less energy that the food which it is compared. “fiber source” means the food contains 2 grams of dietary fiber in the amount of food listed in the nutritional value. A food to the claim “high source fiber ‘contains 4 g in the amount of food. It is recommended that most consume about 25 grams of fiber or more per day. “Minus” is used to compare one product with another. For example, a box Cracker claiming to contain “the salt of 50% less” will have half the sodium of the food to which it is compared. It does not necessarily mean that the product is low in sodium, so check the sodium content in the value nutritious. Even if the claims are a good starting point, you should check the nutrition facts for details. The Nutrition Facts table – What is it for you? Have you ever wondered about the nutritional value of your favorite breakfast cereal? Does dietary fiber you need and is it high or low in sodium or saturated fat? The Nutrition Facts table that you see on almost all packaged foods, it is easier to answer any questions you might have about what is in the foods you buy. In the nutritional value, you will find the number of calories and 13 nutrients in a given quantity of food. These nutrients are expressed in grams (g) or milligrams (mg) or as% Daily Value. The daily values are based on recommendations for healthy eating. The% Daily Value can more easily compare foods because it puts all the nutrients on the same scale (0% – 100% daily value), a bit like a ruler. For example, a food that has a% Daily Value of 5% or less fat , sodium or cholesterol would be low in these nutrients. A food that has a% Daily Value of 15% or more of calcium, vitamin A and fiber are high in these nutrients. In general, you should seek more large% of the daily value of nutrients you are trying to grow in your diet, such as fiber, vitamins A and C, calcium and iron. Look for a low% Daily Value for nutrients you are trying decrease, like saturated fats, trans fat, cholesterol and sodium. Remember also to compare the specific amount of food found at the top of the nutritional value of the quantity you consume. If you eat double the amount indicated, do not forget to double values in calories and nutrients. Nutrition Labeling – This is the amount that counts food labels are valuable sources of information. A Nutrition Facts table is found on almost all labels food and can tell you much about the food you buy. food labels reading can help you make informed food choices, but there are important tips to keep in mind. Nutrition information in nutritive value is still based on the amount that a “specific” food measured in household units – such as a cup of milk or a slice of bread – followed by the metric measurement (g, mL). The amount reflects the quantity people usually eat at one sitting. The key is, however, compare the amount of nutritional value to the amount you actually eat. “Why? A favorite bowl you use at breakfast might hold anywhere from a half-cup of $ 2 ½ cup of cereal. Having 2 ½ cups of cereal may be five times especially the amount specified in nutritional value. If the label on the cereal box indicates an amount ½ cup contains 120 calories, which means that instead of consuming 120 Calories, you just eat a bowl of cereal 600 calories. More tips for using the Nutrition Facts: Remember – the amount of food in Nutrition is not a recommended serving. Canada’s Food Guide recommends the amount and type of food needed for age and sex, and the different stages of life. The Nutrition Facts on different brands of the same type of food may be based on different amounts of food. For example, a brand of cookies may have nutrition information based on eight crackers, while another brand is based on only four crackers. So check the metric amount under the Nutrition Facts when comparing products. Not all foods are sold ‘ready to eat. “Foods that require preparation, such as cake mix baked with an egg, or breakfast cereal with milk, will have a column in Nutrition Facts providing nutrient values for foods sold, while another column provides nutrient values for food “as prepared,” egg or milk, for example.
